What a great property, with so much going on!  A 4bed/3bath single level house on 2.34 acres, in an AG subdivision along the road to Kahakuloa. Most of this property is developed into a “food forest” that provides abundant food to the community through the Maui Food Hub.  The owner, George Kahumoku Jr. has lovingly planted and tended a huge variety of permaculture plants, with a focus on the traditional “canoe plants” that were brought to the islands by the Polynesian voyagers that first populated Hawai’i.  You’ll find coconuts, breadfruit, papayas, bananas, kava, tapioca, taro, coffee, pohole ferns, citrus, and so much more!

The Cliffs at Kahakuloa neighborhood is just a short drive beyond Waiehu and Waihee on the northern shore of West Maui.  Beautiful homes on parcels of 2 acres or more enjoy great ocean views and ocean sunrises in a lovely country setting.  If you’re looking for a sustainable Maui lifestyle where you can grow your own food year round, then this might be what you dreamed of.

We had a tour of the farm and the house for sale and I was really impressed with everything.  The house itself has a great layout, all single level with little or no steps, making it easy for people of any age or ability.  Open concept floorplan, with a kitchen designed for feeding a crowd. Beautiful ocean views with no neighbors in sight.  There was garage space for 3 cars – like his and hers – and access to a mud room for cleaning up before going into the house.  One of the bedrooms is set up as a recording studio, since the owner plays and records music.  The quiet location makes this possible.  I really enjoyed seeing the huge variety of edible plantings everywhere you looked, including the front lawn which was filled with salad greens like New Zealand spinach and Okinawan spinach.  I could get lost in the food forest while picking out things to eat for the next day or two.  Let me know if you want to see the list of plants that grow here.

Take a look at this short video and you can see how beautiful the setting is.

After our farm tour and lunch made from the local ingredients, George Kahumoku Jr. played guitar and we all sang along with him!  What a great day to meet people, learn about food production, and get hands on experience with the canoe plants and Hawai’ian lifestyle.

George is a wonderful host, and he’s looking forward to selling his home so he can start a new adventure with his family.
