Ho’okipa Beach Park
This popular north shore beach park gets a lot of use from early morning surfers, especially in the winter months with high surf. During the pandemic the entry gates weren’t open until 7:00 am which was inconvenient for park users who would have to park along the highway. Concerned community members took it upon themselves to petition the county to make a change to this schedule. It worked!
As of April 1 2023 the gates will now be opened at 5:30 am in perpetuity. The Surfrider Foundation took on the task for the first 3 months, and now it’s being handled by the County of Maui. Read more about it HERE.
You can find Ho’okipa Beach Park along the Hana Highway, just a short distance past Kuau and Mama’s Fish House. Go past the park to the entrance on the Hana side. There’s usually plenty of parking unless there’s a big event or party going on. Be sure to keep an eye out for the sea turtles resting on the sand, but please don’t disturb them.
