A&B sells former sugar cane land to Mahi Pono for $262,000,000

This is a big deal for Maui – 41,000 acres of land has changed hands in one of the largest land sales in Hawaiian history.  The agricultural real estate encompasses virtually the entire Central Valley and includes more than just land, as there are roads, infrastructure and connections with East Maui Irrigation Company.  EMI historically provides water diverted from the rain forests of East Maui.

About the new owners – Maui Pono is a group of investors from California and Canada, with farming experience, who claim they want to keep the land in agricultural usage, with a mind to sustainability and non-GMO crops.  They want to create jobs and build partnerships with local farmers.  Farming operations will include a grass fed beef enterprise, and plans for food crops and fuel crops.
