The story behind the canoe names at Kihei Canoe Club

kihei canoe club Kihei Maui

Each canoe at the Kihei Canoe Club has a story, and a name.

It’s interesting to learn the names and know more about these traditional outrigger canoes that grace the beach in North Kihei, by the Historic Kihei Wharf. Stop in and rediscover a bit of Maui’s history, when this part of the island was quite wild and just being developed as a spot to ship out sugar cane.

Kihei Canoe Club offers a range of options and programs for all ages and skills, with an emphasis on traditional Hawaiian culture.

Maalaea Bay

Paddling in Maalaea Bay is a safe way to experience this cultural practice.  There’s little risk of getting lost at sea, and plenty of safe shoreline to land if needed.  Members like to paddle for recreation as well as for racing competitions. The racing season is generally in the calmer summer months. This is a great activity for the whole family.

Visitors are welcome to come to the Club and try this sport, on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, with sign-in beginning at 7:00 am.  You don’t have to live on Maui to be a member, and anyone is encouraged to join and participate.
