Some stores and retailers can open on Maui now.
May 11, 2020 – Mayor Victorino has announced we can get some businesses open and many people can get back to work, and back to shopping. We have always had access to Costco, Target, Lowe’s and other essential services, but the selection has been quite limited.
It’s been about a month and a half since we were ordered to close non-essential businesses and stay at home, to help keep the virus in check. Hawaii has done a good job of stopping the spread of COVID-19 and therefore the Governor and the Mayor are optimistic about starting the return to normal, in phases.
On Monday the 11th, some retailers were allowed to open, and it’s optional still at this point. Queen Ka’ahumanu Center, Maui Mall, and The Shops at Wailea are among the malls that are allowed to open, with mixed results. It seems that a lot of the surf shops and smaller local shops are taking the lead and are ready for business. The big stores like Macy’s and Sears are still closed. Barber shops and hairdressers are not allowed to open yet, and we expect the next phase will include high contact services.
In Paia you can now find these places open:
PAIA MAUI retail shops open:
- Hi-Tech Surf Sports
- Rip Curl
- Luna & Tide
- Nuage Bleu
Under Maui County rules, retailers must require patrons and staff to wear face masks, and shops must have a plan for social distancing and regular cleaning and sanitizing. So be sure to take your cloth face mask and your shopping bags with you if you go out shopping on Maui.
