Growing tropical fruits on Maui
One of the great things about living in Haiku Maui is that you can grow a lot of your own food. There’s such a large variety of fruit trees that do well in this climate. Tropical fruits do well in the lower elevations and I’ll share some pictures with you. We grow a lot of these, or I see them at neighbor homes and homes for sale.
A fruit orchard can help with your agricultural plan when you’re seeking a building permit on AG land. This is a whole other topic related to building on Maui. I encourage you to find a home that’s already built, with existing orchards and gardens if you don’t have the patience to wait. I can help you find one.
Buyers really appreciate a property with mature fruit trees. Be sure to ask your agent about this because some trees take a long time to produce, such as macadamia nuts. Others, like bananas and papayas can be harvested rather quickly, in just a year or two. We started our little dragon fruit patch with a few stalks from a friend. In year 2 we had the first fruits, and every year since then it just got better and better.
Avocados have to be some of the easiest trees to grow. It’s no joke that in Haiku you can just throw the pits over the deck into the gulch and they’ll grow! Watch out what you throw away. Have you ever planted some lemon seeds to see if they grow? Citrus fruits like a lot of water and sunshine and provide abundant harvests.
